About the Exhibition
Maria Paterson solo exhibition
Australian artist, Maria Paterson, uses a box of Talens Rembrandt pastels, dating to the 1930's, to work in full size and miniature, original pastels.
The artist often works "large", but these days finds the portability of miniature paintings suitable to her lifestyle. Miniatures are finely detailed, usually very small paintings, often less than 5 x 7 inches, or 10 cm square.
Maria's enchanting still life, the cat & the pearls is a colorful, highly detailed interior scene, typical of her style. Maria is well known for her children's circus series. Friends, one such work, is beautifully balanced, with an abstract, geometric basis that highlights the pair of performing children.
One cannot discuss Maria Paterson's work, without mentioning her oil paintings of nude females on horseback, for example, three graces of middle pocket, depicting the freedom of riding bareback against the wind.
